Dr Alice Lam
As flu usually hits Australia between June and September, it is still a good time to get your shot. However, due to national stock availability issues, clinics have been advised to prioritise high risk patients. Please enquire via our practice nurse for availability of flu vaccine (as there are different ones for different age groups).
This year, the government has also funded free flu vaccinations for all those aged six months and up to less than 5 years of age, as well as for the over-65s (for whom there are specially formulated vaccines giving increased effectiveness). This in addition to free shots for anyone 5 years and over with certain medical issues, such as asthma, heart disease, diabetes, low immunity and kidney disease, and pregnant women at any stage.
Check out this link from the Australian Government's Department of Health for more info.
Don't forget that eligible patients should also receive pneumonia vaccinations, which are covered in a separate blog.
